JapanKnowledge has added video segments from the NHK program “World Heritage 100 Series” on selected World Heritage sites to its contents.
World Heritage sites are divided into three categories: natural heritage sites, created by the course of nature and the passage of time; cultural heritage sites, created by the human intellect and history; and mixed heritage sites, which contain value as both natural heritage and cultural heritage sites. Once a year, UNESCO (United Nations Educational Science and Culture Organization)’s World Heritage Committee deliberates on candidates recommended by each country, and registers sites worth protecting on the World Heritage List. All sites on this list are valuable treasures of our common humanity which must be passed down to future generations. For detailed information about each world heritage site, please see the Complete Japanese Encyclopedia (Encyclopedia Nipponica).
