Bungeishunju Ltd.'s Nihon no Ronten(THE ISSUES FOR JAPAN) is Japan's first comprehensive anthology of essays on various controversial issues. In 1991, with the collapse of the Soviet Union, human society was confronting the need for a major shift in values. The premises upon which debate was shaped no longer held. As the world entered a dramatic transformation, Japan could not afford to be left behind.
In response, the first issue of this anthology—1,120 pages in length—was published in 1992, with the aim to clarify "what are the issues today" and "what are the points of contention" in Japanese society. It could be fairly called Japan's first encyclopedia of the debates taking place. At a time when the world was in the midst of change, 120 leading Japanese critics came together in these pages to take on the challenge of 120 issues, engaging themselves passionately in the discourse. THE ISSUES FOR JAPAN, which has been published yearly since then with original essays, is enormously popular, and is used not only by students writing essays and reports, but also by teachers, national and local public servants, politicians, journalists, and even businesspeople, as a must-read item when wanting to express one's opinions in a bold and clear manner. The JapanKnowledge edition includes 15 years of the anthology from 1997 to 2011. It will be updated in the future with the issue of new editions. In addition to the OneLook search function, it can be searched using a special index created by the editorial staff. It is a great tool that allows readers to quickly identify the debate they are looking for. ![]() Contents information
